It's Time to Choose the Photographer

Marlene Way Photography

Where do you start? What do you look for? The task of choosing a photographer can be a bit overwhelming - especially with the amount of information you can access on the internet. The first question you need to answer is what type of photographer do you want? There are three types:

I. Photojournalistic = This type of photographer captures the day as it happens. The photos are spontaneous, not posed. This type of photographer is not your traditional photographer. Their style is more of what you would find in a magazine or newspaper.

II. Illustrative = "Natural, relaxed, fun. Not quite posed, yet not entirely candid either. Lightly prompted." - Bambi Cantrell. This is where the photographer will suggest you do things that you may or may not have done on your own to achieve certain shots. With this type of photographer, you will get more interaction, not direction.

III. Traditional & Posed = Classic posed portraits. "Creating images which represent the feeling of the day". With this type of photographer, you will be posed for pictures that are very flattering. Most of your photos will be with you looking at the camera.

The internet is a great place to start. On WeddingReports.com and CTPhotographers.com, you can narrow your search by finding a Photographer in your area. Once you have decided on a few different photographers, it is essential you meet with each of them. Remember: You will be with your photographer the entire day. If you are not comfortable with him/her, your photographs will reflect it. Be sure that both of you meet with each photographer and that you have your questions written down before you go. Check to see if the photographer offers packages with an engagement photo session. This is a great time to let your photographer know what kind of shots and poses you are looking for and also to build a relationship with her/him. Also, don't let price dictate the photographer you choose. Set a financial range that you are comfortable with. Your final choice should be made by considering all factors, not just one or two.

Finding a photographer can be confusing. I hope this article helps to take the mystery out of the process. If you have any questions on finding your wedding photographer, don't hesitate to contact Marlene Way of Marlene Way Photography, LLC.
